The basic idea for this plan was taken from an article by Steve Howe in the Narrow Gauge and Industrial Railway Modeling Review, issue 35. It depicts a narrow gauge mining railroad climbing a mountain using switchbacks. One of these switchbacks is the focal point of this layout.
More of a diorama than a layout,
this plan is an experiment in scenery. To get the right feel, I'd emphasize
vertical scenery a lot. Imagine steep cliffs, rock and wood retaining walls
or spindly trestles. Basically scenery like on Malcolm Furlow's layouts ...
As indicated by the
blue line, a curved front could be used.
From an operation point of view, there is not much. A train with a few short hopper cars arrives from the upper track, picks up one or two loaded cars from the mine or the other siding, switches the caboose to the other end of the train and then leaves again towards the lower track.
